Herb’s Blog, Herbdate 23071 – 1119

Here’s the haps:

So as I came to the end of this series I felt some relief but I knew I wasn’t out of the woods, yet. I could go with Zion National Park in Utah which is a beautiful place and I have friends in Utah. Then I thought of The Road to Zanzibar with Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, and Dorothy Lamour but decided not to go with it because it didn’t really interest me and while the team in that movie is really funny it was made in 1941 and full of stereotypes of the era. I never mean to offend, I’m just naturally good at it, but in this case, it just didn’t reach out and grab me, either, although the name Zanzibar is really fun to say. There is a Zeeland in North Dakota and a Zeeland in Michigan but the one in North Dakota is only 81 people and even though the one in Michigan is over 5,000, when I go to Michigan Mrs. Herb has a place she needs to go to research an ancestor and I really want to go to the Upper Peninsula, commonly called “Da U.P.” by the inhabitants known as Yoopers.

Of course, I thought about New Zealand, or, Zealand, New but that felt a bit like a copout. What to do? What to do? It wouldn’t be my first ever copout but then I got to thinking, well, if there is a New Zealand there must also be an old Zealand somewhere. So, I learned that the biggest island of Denmark, where the capital, Copenhagen, is, is in fact, the island of Zealand.

According to the site Visit Denmark (https://www.visitdenmark.com/denmark/destinations/zealand) there are quite a number of things to do and see there. Two of the things I would want to do there, are visit the open-air Shakespeare Festival in Copenhagen done in both English and Danish and I would have to see Kronberg Castle, more famously known as Elsinore where Shakespeare’s (arguably) most famous play, Hamlet is set.

I only worry…I mean, I have to wonder…would it be a faux pas if I went down to the fisherman’s wharf and sniffed the air, and said, “Something is rotten in the state of Denmark?”

    I did not know that that’s where old Zealand is. Neat. Another thing you could do is buy your wife a pair of earrings with a little bee on each one.

    I heard of Zion National Park in Utah because once a tour bus belonging to an Asian travel agency in Los Angeles flipped to its side on a curvy road leading to the park entrance. It was said that the road had practically no traffic.

    I had never wondered about a Zealand that is not new. I guess I’m not curious enough. I would have probably copped out and visited Zionsville, Indiana. It is a bedroom community northwest if Indianapolis and maybe a 20 minute drive for me. It would be a great trip for the travel-weary person to has hit destinations with names starting with A through Y.

    And congrats on finishing the series.

      Zionsville sounds nice with “tree-lined streets and 500+ acres of parks…” If there’s a Mom and Pop diner in a hole in the wall there, I’m in.

        There is: The Friendly Tavern, which will make you a first class breaded pork tenderloin sandwich (with kettle chips) for $8.99. It is not far from the place where you can get your Rolls-Royce serviced. Something for everybody. 🙂
