Here’s the haps:

Art Vegan was out visiting his friend, Farmer Billy Bob. Bill was not really experienced in farming and he had some strange ideas. He was explaining his new theory of keeping swine. His idea was to let them run free on the large expanse of grass in front of his house.

“I don’t know, Billy Bob. Was I you, I would keep them in the sty in a strong fenced-in enclosure.”

“That’s old-fashioned, Art. This is the modern way. Let them run free on the grassy meadow.”

“Well, sometimes, if something’s been done the same way for hundreds, even thousands of years, there’s usually a reason for it but it’s none of my business, of course.”

“Oh, don’t worry.” And he just opened the door and let his small herd of pigs out. It didn’t take long to see the error of his ways as soon they had destroyed the pretty little meadow and everything else. Art helped him recapture them or there would have been even more damage.

“I guess you were right, Art.” Said Billy-Bob, humbly, “I should have built a strong enclosure and never let them near the grass. I should have known that the pen is mightier than the sward.”

  1. My first real pet when I was a child was a pig. His name was “Piggy-Hoink” and I loved him just as much as most people love their dogs.

  2. If this was down south, Bill could have kept the pigs at a pawnshop. I understand that ham hocks are popular in that part of the country.
