Greetings, Salutations, and Hi there, Herb’s Habitués!

Here’s the haps:

Today is World Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Day. MS is a disease that has many symptoms, some treatments with varying efficacy, and no known cure. It’s a demyelinating disease of the brain and central nervous system. TNT, who has the Primary/Progressive form of the disease explains it using the illustration of your nervous system being like electrical wiring. The Myelin sheath around the nerves is like the insulation on the wires. Demyelination is the stripping of the insulation. In multiple sclerosis, the protective coating on the nerve fibers (myelin) is damaged and may eventually be destroyed. Depending on where the nerve damage occurs, MS can affect vision, sensation, coordination, movement, and bladder or bowel control.

A very clear article with enough detail to be interesting but not technical enough to make you yawn is in this article by the Mayo Clinic. TNT’s support group website, Multiple Sclerosis Alliance of Southern Colorado.
