This place was kind of mind-boggling, Derinkuyu in Cappadocia central Turkey. A guy who was renovating his basement in 1962 knocked out a wall and discovered a room that led to a passage which eventually led to the discovery (actually rediscovery because it was known of before) of an ancient underground city that could hold 20,000 people. It has stables, cellars, storage areas, refectories, churches, and wineries with a complex ventilation system that is built in such a way that the oxygen ratio never changes no matter what level you’re on. It has wells that reach all the way to the surface, too. It goes down 8 levels over 200 feet. Only about 10% of it is open to the general public while the rest is still being explored by archaeologists.
This guy’s video is a little longer (13 minutes) than I usually have been using but he shows the place off pretty well. He has a thick accent but I was able to understand him well enough.
Of course, while I am there, I MUST have a correctly brewed cup of Turkish coffee made in a real copper pot.
