Blogging A – Z Challenge 2021: Q Is For Quotations

Herb’s Blog, Herbdate 22355 – 819:

Here’s the haps:

Many of you read this blog on the WordPress reader and never visit the actual blog itself. That’s cool, but I have a couple of things on the main page of the blog that I am proud of and/or really like. One is my Northwich Warrior Society Badge:

Boo That Fear!

Which I was awarded for saying “Boo That Fear” and writing a post about a personal, private, fear or anxiety. The post was done last January and is simply called, “Fear?

Another item I really enjoy is the random quote widget which displays, yes, a random quote each time the page is refreshed. I have over forty quotes in there and then twenty-some Louis L’Amour quotes on the main webpage.

I just thought I’d share some of my favorite, favorite quotes here. Limiting myself was hard but here, in no specific order, goes a baker’s dozen of my favorite quotes:

Social tact is making your company feel at home even though you wish they were.

Old Farmer’s Almanac

There was that Texas Ranger, McDonald, who said, “There’s no stopping a man who knows he’s in the right and keeps a-coming.”

Flagan Sackett – Galloway

“It’s no shame to be poor, but it’s no great honor, either.”

Reb Tevye

“The most wasted of all days is one without laughter.”

e.e. cummings

“…So please, oh please, we beg, we pray, go throw your TV set away, and in its place you can install, a lovely bookshelf on the wall…”

Roald Dahl from the poem Television

“I’ll give you the whole secret to short story writing. Here it is. Rule 1: Write stories that please yourself. There is no Rule 2.”

O. Henry

“Each writer is born with a repertory company in his head. Shakespeare has perhaps twenty players, and Tennessee Williams has about five, and Samuel Beckett one – and maybe a clone of that one. I have ten or so, and that’s a lot. As you get older, you become more skillful at casting them.”

Gore Vidal

“Squatting by the fire I tried to blink the sleep from my eyes while pouring a cup of coffee. It was hot, and black as the hinges of hell, but it tasted good.”

Flagan Sackett – Galloway

“I can’t imagine a man really enjoying a book and reading it only once.”

C.S. Lewis

“Miracles are in the wings, in the ink of unopened typewriter ribbons, craving release.”

Joyce Carol Oates

“…You can’t turn back the clock, kid, but you can wind it up again.”

Smokey Yunick – Cars 3

“Somebody comin’,” he said softly. “Five or six, maybe.” His words were spoken over an empty fire, for each of us vanished ghostlike into the surrounding darkness. I, fortunately, had the presence of mind to retain my coffee. With the Ferguson rifle in my right hand, I drank coffee from the cup in my left.

Ronan Chantry – The Ferguson Rifle

Remember, the Good Book says:

Out of Ephraim was there a root of them against Amalek; after thee, Benjamin, among thy people; out of Machir came down governors, and out of Zebulun they that handle the pen of the writer.

Judges 5:14

I love a good quote! This is why I have a quote every Monday. I’m not fancy like you and have a random generator, though; now I want one.

I know in the WordPress.org plugin store there are several. I don’t know about the WordPress.com side, sorry.

Oh well. I’ll just enjoy yours. 🙂

Thank you. I add to it occasionally.

    Roald Dahl is AMAZING
Yes I actually agree with that quote about someone reading a book only once… Even though you know what’s going to happen, there’s a certain joy in reading the same thing over and over and over again.

And I always seem to wait that magical amount of time that I remember the ending satisfied me but I don’t recall all the details.

Yes, “write stories to please yourself”. O’Henry is right. It is interesting that in writing one can always transform something upsetting into something nice or even funny. It is a great catharsis. LOL.

    1. Herb Avatar

      You’re right about that.

I wanted to argue that Samuel Beckett had more than one player in his company, but I don’t think I can.

The most wasted of all days is one without laughter (Yes I Took It)

I have heard that one before.

It’s a favorite I have seen it attributed to Alexander Halmilton but I’m not so sure aboutb that

        1. Herb Avatar

Sometimes it’s hard to pin down a solid attribution.

The random quote widget is cool. It isn’t available to WordPress. com users, as you mentioned.
I did learn from someone (I don’t remember who…) how to create a ‘random post’ widget, though!

    1. Herb Avatar

That’s cool. I like the random post thing, too.

I usually visit your actual page and I like the quotes!

Come on…you know I visit your page. How else would I complain about the coffee stains.

    1. Herb Avatar

lol. I know that’s true. Here, have a cup.

I love a good batch of quotations, and this one qualifies.
