Fairbanks, Alaska on the Blogging A – Z Challenge

Herb’s Blog, Herbdate 23071 – 1096

Here’s the haps:

As I have been doing these posts on places I would like to visit I think some are going to be much easier than others and there are a few pipe dreams coming up in the list. Stretch goals, I’ll call them. That being said, all of these posts really are about places that have piqued my interest in one way or another.

Alaska has always kind of piqued my interest. Fairbanks, Alaska, The Land of the Midnight Sun, is very close to the Arctic Circle, and has daylight most of the time in summer and nighttime most of the time in winter. The town’s population is 32,721, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that they have an International Airport, FAI, which makes flying there a solid possibility. You can take a cruise there and my wife talked about driving through Canada as well. That might be an adventure in itself, eh? There are tours of the Arctic Circle available as well as Denali National Park. Alaska is a place that is rich in history and that’s really interesting to me as well.

Plus, I grew up listening to stuff like this:

Likelihood of this happening within the next year: 0+%
Likelihood of this happening in my lifetime (Lord willing, as I said in the first couple of posts): 90%
Likelihood of running into someone I know or met on the Internet: 50% or more because I have several readers in Canada and depending on the route I would take it’s not an impossible idea.

  1. I was always told that my Mom was born in Juneau, but her birth certificate said Fairbanks. At any rate, I would love to go. I’ve talked to a lot of people who have spent time there, and they’ve all loved it.

  2. I was privileged to live in Kenai, AK, back in the 70s and got around Cook Inlet and Anchorage quite a bit, but unfortunately, never made it up north to Fairbanks, Nome nor Wainwright.
Maybe I should put these on my wish list as well. Let Anita and I know when you’re heading there, and who knows, we might mooch a ride😉, or at least meet you up there!
But I’m bringing my ESV, not my KJV! 😂
    ❤️&🙏, c.a. c.a.

  3. I grew up following that Honky-Tonk Man Johnny Horton from New Orleans North to Alaska. Somewhere along the way we sunk the Bismark. You should definitely hit Canada and Alaska. You would love making new friends and finding some old ones.

  4. Don’t drive there since it can be dangerous because not many people live along the route and you will have trouble finding help when you need help. I read a short story about the Alaska cruise “Stone Mattress”. It is quite dramatic. I wish there have been more description of Alaska in there.

    • That is an interesting perspective. I have heard a lot of nice things about the people of Canada, though. We’ll have to wait and see what happens, I guess.

  5. Driving to Alaska isn’t likely very dangerous – just long and shouldn’t be undertaken without good planning! About 25 years ago, we drove from Grande Prairie Alberta to Tok Alaska in a motorhome with 4 adults, 3 teens and a preschooler – and lived to tell the tale.
Today, I’d arrive in Alaska on a cruise boat…

    • Thanks for that input. I’m not even real sure I will like cruising, but I might. Flights are not that expensive if they’re booked far enough in advance, either.

  6. We did a cruise to Alaska out of Seattle and it was amazing. I’d love to do it again, but don’t see me flying across the country. Sigh…
