The Catch

Herb’s Blog, Herbdate 22181 – 751:

Johnny Blankenstern was sitting alone, eating in a fancy restaurant bemoaning his forced retirement from baseball just as he was going to move up to the big leagues. Bitterly he sat and watched the baseball documentary that showed Willie Mays’ famous catch in the 1954 World Series that had now become known simply as, “The Catch”. The injury to his leg that he suffered from the car accident meant he would never play serious ball again. He was depressed and feeling sorry for himself and he noticed this beautiful woman sitting alone and eating at the next table. He wondered what her story might be but couldn’t muster up the courage to talk to her. Suddenly, just as he looked at her again and sighed to himself, she sneezed and her glass eye came flying out of her socket. He reflexively grabbed and snatched it out of the air.

“Oh, I am so sorry,” the woman said, as she popped her eye back in place. “Let me buy your dinner to make it up to you.” They enjoyed a wonderful dinner together and afterward the woman invited him to the theater and dancing afterward. After paying for everything, she asked him if he would like to come over for breakfast the next morning. Johnny’s depression lifted and when he arrived the next morning, she had cooked a gourmet meal with all the trimmings. He was really amazed! “You know, you are perfect. Are you this nice to every guy you meet?”

“No,” she replied, “You just happened to catch my eye.”
